Until recently, snails have been an understudied and relatively unknown group of organisms. This is quickly changing though as the group is being used as an indicator of overall forest health – similar to macroinvertebrates and streams.
We at Apogee have conducted many snail surveys, including several for the federally threatened flat-spired three-toothed land snail (Triodopsis platysayoides). Staff have recently published “Diversity, substrata, divisions and biogeographical affinities of land snails at Bad Branch State Nature Preserve, Letcher County, Kentucky,” and are working on a similar study at Breaks Interstate Park in Virginia and Kentucky. In addition to these works, staff will soon begin work on the book “Terrestrial gastropods of Central America.” This will be the first comprehensive book of this scope published for the region.
